Aveiro – about an hour south of Porto. Aveiro is the Portuguese "Venice", famous for its canals, gondolas, egg-yolk based pastry and colorful striped houses at the beach.
Coimbra
- this town is home to the oldest Portuguese University(1290) and one of the oldest in Europe. It is also famous for its Fado, Portuguese popular music.
Nazaré - this small fishing town is located 1 hour north of Lisbon. It is famous for its giant (30+meters) waves. There are a couple of nice local fish and seafood restaurants.
Óbidos - this small town is located in center-west of Portugal. Its labyrinthic and colorful streets are inside the wall of the medieval castle. It is best represented in the country and abroad by Ginja (or Ginginha), a sweet liquor made from sour cherry.
